About
Myntkarfan is an ordinary Icelandic person in her mid thirties. Married, two kids, a home and a car. MA degree within social sciences. Will start a regular job after newyear, after years of free lance this and that.
The reason for this blog is that in the summer of 2007 Myntkarfan and family took a so called “foreign currency loan” (in Icelandic often referred to as Myntkörfulán or a “basket of currencies loan”). At that time the family owned about 30% of the property they bought. A rough year later that part had shrunken down to 0%. Today, in November 2008 the foreign currency loan that originally was 22 million ISK is 50 million ISK.
Myntkarfan is not alone in this situation. The whole population of Iceland is dealing with the consequences of the economical collapse. Only a small fragment of the populations (government and investors) are responsible. The athmosphere is tense.
The purpose of this blog is to try to open a window to the outside world. Should anyone be curious to find out how the everyday life of ordinary people is affected, this blog could be of interest.
